I "Stretch the Truth" with stories from "Here, There and Elsewhere." All of this with no foul language or shouting!!

Elsewhere.

There are the slightly tall stories from Elsewhere, Western Australia. Elsewhere is so named because the weather reports always tell you that the weather will be fine "Elsewhere". The stories are about Merv and the Missus and their friends, neighbours, dogs, and the wheat growing (or lack thereof) which is central to their lives. It is a tough environment where only the tough and inventive survive. Elsewhere is where the cockies go harvesting with a radar and a search warrant, empty two lanes of the swimming pool each year and pay land rates on their neighbours farm because that's the way the wind blows. The stories are about wheat dogs, Bungarra tossing, home brew, getting a haircut and a myriad of subjects from every day life in the bush. Further inland from Elsewhere is station country and a few yarns drift in from “Remainder" (because the weather reports say the Remainder will be fine as well.)

Some of my own experiences slip into a performance. Well … beheading chooks, cows with windows in their stomachs and getting a Saint Hilda’s girl’s hair caught in my zipper are events worth talking about!! Slightly embellished with time, and always funny, these stories are about sibling rivalry, frights and fights, accidents, not eating the peas and trying to make the older sheep drop dead in order to supplement our meagre pocket money. These stories are all true!

There.

I also recite ballads from the written tradition of Australian Bush Ballads  like "Saltbush Bill", "The Ballad of the Birdsville Drover" and "How McDougall Topped the Score" . I can’t help looking for the humorous yarns in verse and include many contemporary pieces.
